Coral Gables, the dream of a Poet

The City of Coral Gables is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Built in the Miami Metro area, it is about 8 miles southwest of downtown. Coral Cables was developed by poet George Merrick during the 1920s. After inheriting a citrus grove from his father, Merrick began to develop the land into the City of Coral Gables.

Of his dream for the city, Merrick wrote the following poem:

"I dream of the home of the Fairies and Fays,
on the isles of the calm southern sky,
Of the fanciful turrets and towers ablaze
In the flood of the rays from on high..."

As one of the first planned communities in America, The Gables had strict zoning regulations and architectural requirements. The city was intended to imitate the Mediterranean Revival style. Within just a few years, The Gables covered 10,000 acres and had hundreds of millions of dollars spent on development. Today, The Gables has over 42,000 residents and features some of the best nightlife and top Latin restaurants around.
